5 & Diner History
It was founded by Mr. and Mrs. Pat McGroder and Lenny Rosenberg as co-founders. This would be a new name if you are an old-timer in this chain.
The real growth began after it was sold off to Ken Higginbotham. The founders tried to run it but eventually failed.
A bad reputation surrounded its name, so it wasn’t that attractive to most. But to Ken, it was the deal of a lifetime since he was about to change his entire identity.
It was located in central Phoenix. It wasn’t known for anything at this point; it was considered a ghost store by most.
So, Ken transformed the menu with three things in mind: quick service dinner, 1950s diner architecture, and breakfast.
The past owner thought only serving lunch and dinner was a good idea, which was an obvious misconception.
Furthermore, the uniforms were messy, and the counter was made uneven from both sides. In short, it was vile, so its reputation went down the gutter.
Ken closed down everything and started doing some serious renovations like changing the uniforms to poodle skirts, upgrading the counter, menu, and so on.
These big steps didn’t shine overnight. According to one of his interviews, it took 5 & Diner about 2 years to attract regulars.
He still remembers handing out flyers by himself and with a dozen others. The highlights of these flyers were better food and better service.
The tides started turning in the 90s as the 10 o’clock downtime slowly started being crowded with lots of people.
This was the time when 5 & Diner was recognized as a symbol of the 1950s dining style and a theme that mesmerized thousands of people.
5 & Diner Review
Do you still have doubts about the 5 & Diner menu or prices? You are basically looking at breakfast, lunch, and dinner sets, with some other sides here and there.
We arrived around 10, and it was the best time for the Denver Omelette. A big plate of ham, green peppers, cheddar cheese, onions, and sour cream.
All are served inside three fresh egg omelets and one side of bread of your choice. English muffins are the best combo with eggs any time of the day, so go for that.
The omelet was really well made. Nobody would’ve expected these levels of quality and flavor before Ken took over.
In fact, we talked with some old timers, and they said omelets were usually burned with an uneven taste. Some were cooked on low heat, even though medium is the go-to choice.
These things are not just well made; they also smell sweet and remind you of the countryside. A jukebox is playing right around the counter, giving off the 50s vibe this place is known for.
And let’s not forget the overall atmosphere; it’s quiet, yet the decorations don’t stay silent. Both food and the building itself sing a song that only visionaries can hear.
Anyway, the next one is Diner Wings. We know it’s not dinner time, but my hunger won’t stop without gushing down these proteins.
It comes with 12 delicious wings tossed in your choice of sauce and served with celery sticks and ranch dressing.
Buffalo sauce is the recommended one. Well, the ingredients don’t sound that fancy because the main highlights are these dazzled wings covered in a tasty sauce.
The sauce is quite good too, and the wings are just the right size, so you can fill them all in one go.

Final Thoughts
The wings were so exceptional for this price. The sticky sauce did the trick of making it interesting.
But beware; these things are a menace if they touch your all-white shirts. Best of luck cleaning that vile stain up.
Overall, we had three big meals, three sides, one salad, and a few glasses of drinks. Not bad; most people said the same things.
Each dish looks expensive, but the good part is that there is no shortage of portions. Big portions, even on sides, are unusual.
And to commemorate that, we give it full marks and a massive thumbs up for anyone thinking of trying their items at least once before leaving for other areas.
