Azteca History

Azteca Inside

It’s an American restaurant, but its origins begin in Mexico. Jose ‘Pepe’ Ramos, the founder, grew up in a small village in Mexico.

It was called Cuautla, and it was situated in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. His father ran a local grocery shop. It was a small place, but he had enough income to feed his family.

But the expense slowly started growing along with his kids. So Jose and his siblings decided to give a hand in the business at the age of 12.

After school was over, he would rush to his father’s store and help in dealing with customers. There he learned the basic principles of commerce, like buying, selling, and bargaining.

These basic things would later turn him into a restaurant giant when he arrived in the US at age 73.

He only had a few pesos and a dream to work for his family. His education didn’t include English, so he couldn’t communicate on his own.

After arriving, he quickly began working at two jobs. The first one was as a dishwasher in his cousin’s restaurant, Todd Shipyard.

He worked there from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. Then he would rush over to his second job. Nowadays, the younger generation cries about 8 hours of work.

Remember that there was a time when people actually worked for, or more than, 12 hours a day? Anyway, Jose was at the bottom of the food chain.

He made his way from dishwasher to cook and eventually into a chef. At this point, he learned English, which also played a big role in his job ventures.

By 1974, he had saved $1000. He used that and his cousin’s blessings to open his first restaurant. And we already know what that was called: Azteca Mexican Restaurant.

Make sure to check out the Azteca menu prices given above. There are a lot of good things, and some do look unique too.

Like this unique dish called Molcajete. It’s a bowl combo that comes with your choice of side and a big tortilla that you can dip and eat.

Think of it like a chicken or steak stew. Or you can add both and turn it into a giant bowl of protein that is guaranteed to fill your belly to the brim.

Well, I’m not looking to stop at one dish, so I personally went for chicken. Others looked up to the steak one, and that didn’t look bad at all.

The chicken was sautéd in a mildly spicy sauce with mushrooms and onions. That’s only the base of things; at the top, you’ll get a massive layer of melted Monterey Jack cheese.

Surprisingly, there was also a slice of avocado at the top. More like a decoration, but I like that. Pretty much all fruits are my favorites at this point, regardless of their origin and taste.

Most of us went for Mexican rice as the side dish and a flour tortilla. Rice always goes well with taste-blasting recipes like this.

Thankfully, we have a bowl full of that. Without a doubt, this is the best Mexican dish I have had so far. Usually, tacos and burritos come to mind whenever someone speaks Mexican.

But this dish changed my mind completely. Why is this the first time I’ve seen this? This is a heavenly combo that should’ve been on our radar.

Next up was a Mexican pizza. Made with pretty much the same stuff as the bowl. But it’s baked, so the flavors have a different side to it.

Final Thoughts

Azteca is truly a place for families. It has complete dishes, not just fast or junk food ones; instead, you’ll find real lunch and dinner dishes that will fill you up in one go.

Usually, TexMex foods need to be ordered in batches or multiple times. But these traditional Mexican cuisines say no to that and give you everything on your first serving.

It’s a 10/10 service; fingers crossed. Food is not only tasty but also comes in a big pack. Bowl dishes definitely cost more, and it’s not cheap by any means.

But it managed to give us so much food that we couldn’t find any loopholes to report. The same goes for the Mexican pizza; it was filled with toppings, and we literally couldn’t see the crust. Just fantastic, mind-blowing service!
