Bertucci’s History

Bertucci's Inside

Joseph (“Joey”) Crugnale, the founder of Bertucci’s, was born in Sulmona, Italy. He then immigrated to the United States due to his first job.

He was stationed at a hotel in Cambridge as a porter. But it wasn’t long before he tried his hands on something else.

He opened his first ice cream stall in 1974. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it still provided the necessary experience that he desired.

One year later, he bought Steve’s Ice Cream from Steve Herrell for $80,000. He was quite fond of his ice cream business and even managed to franchise 26 locations.

But he soon found out that his heart had always belonged to his homeland, Italy. So did he leave the USA? Well, obviously not; instead, he dreamed of bringing his homeland here.

Italy is known for its pizzas, which are their regional cuisine, which no one can deny. And this is what would later act as the catalyst for his dream of a homeland.

He sold off the ice cream business to Integrated Resources in 1983 for $4.5 million and then used that money to open a new concept.

It was called Bertucci’s Pizza and Bocce, and the first location opened in 1981. Surprisingly, he placed it right across from his old business.

It’s to eliminate any possible business rival for his old mates, and by doing this, he secured a good location that was already well aware of his great presence.

It didn’t take long before his new pizza business boomed. It was given since he demonstrated the old-fashioned brick oven.

He baked each pizza right in front of the customers. It’s usually hot, so it became a ritual to stick around during the winter season. Rapid expansion began from the ’90s until the 21st century.

Bertucci’s Review

This place is nothing but a wonder for us. I actually ate here once during my high school years. And I have to say, it was fantastic.

Still, make sure to have a good look at Bertucci’s menu prices given above. With that, let’s begin with our first item, The Big Italian.

It’s a thick boy with a big heart! Savor each bite filled with ham, provolone, salami, prosciutto, red wine vinegar, arugula, and much, much more.

But that’s not all; you’ll also get wood-fired focaccia, seasoned fries, insalata, and baked rolls. It’s a superb party for just 10 dollars.

Think of it as a sandwich, but Italian style. Nonetheless, it doesn’t back down from adding bold ingredients.

These ingredients are freshly plucked from the local market. The quality control seems to be of top quality, so don’t worry about getting anything rotten.

Fries are again marvelously made. Even the batter is thick, so it fits perfectly with our big dish. It’s funny that this item has remained the same since the first time I ate it.

No words can describe how great it is. So all you can do is chow down yourself. Just be ready for a big surprise!

Now it’s time for a pizza item, and we decided to order the Classic Margherita. It’s been the top seller for far too long, and Anders finds out if it really deserves all the crowded praise or not.

It uses fresh mozzarella cheese, house-made tomato sauce, pecorino romano, and fresh basil for the main dough. As for sides, you can expect the same stuff as the first one.

Or change it however you like. I’ll recommend ordering a cup of tomato basil along with it. Believe me, dipping it in that rather than the provided ranch makes a huge difference.

Final Thoughts

Bertucci’s is in a league of its own. It stayed at the top of its game from day one. Some things have changed, and the flavor changes can be noticed.

Still, it’s for the better. I can never say it tastes worse or anything. It’s more like a sweet addition. Things taste more salty, which is what modern generations crave.

I’ll leave it at that; you can decide on your own whether that’s a good thing or not. As for the ratings, Bertucci’s gets 10/10.

Not even a single flaw. Some locations may perform badly or worse. Well, that’s all up to the manager; we can’t take responsibility for every single location.

We went to Medford, and it was a fantastic experience. Make sure to dine in instead of ordering it online. The venue is quite charming, and you must experience it.
