Checkers and Rally’s History
Checkers and Rally’s were supposed to serve two parts of this nation. Checkers serves the Southeast, while Rally’s serves the Middle West.
Rally’s was the first one to be founded in 1985 by Jim Patterson. The Checkers were established a year later by Jim Mattei.
Checkers was spelled Checker’s at the time, resonating with its brother from the Middle West. This was a massively bold move that no one had thought of before.
Twin Restaurants? People will call you stupid if you bring up this story in the past, but not anymore. The duo of Checkers and Rally’s started a revolution that changed the fate of Drive-Thru forever.
Rally’s was the major player from this duo, who eventually absorbed three competitions in 1991 and 1992 called Maxie’s of America, Snapps Drive-Thru, and Zipps Drive-Thru.
The big merger happened in 1999 when Checkers acquired Rally’s. Some things happened, and Rally’s had to keep the short end of the straw.
But instead of absorbing everything, Checkers decided to keep Rally’s as its partner and then merge its name into its brand.
Eventually, the menus from both chains were merged, and now they are only separated by names. Everything, from their online website to Decore, looks similar.
From the start of the 21st century, Checkers and Rally’s went through some serious games of being bought and sold.
The first one happened in 2006, then in 2014, and finally, it was settled on March 23, 2017, by Oak Hill Capital Partners for $525 million.
Against all odds, Checkers officially returned to Penn Hills in 2019. This happened right before the worldwide lockdown due to COVID-19.
There was another case where Checkers and Rally’s disclosed a long-term data breach on May 29, 2019.
Checkers and Rally’s Review
Checkers and Rally’s menu prices are pretty straightforward. Same brand, different name, same menu, maybe same price?
We went to Checkers since that’s where we live. Anyway, the first item on the list is the Fully Loaded Fry Burger. A fascinating dish that includes potato fries as the main ingredient.
Well, Checkers is known for their delicious fries, so it’s just a given that some dishes would be centered around them. Also, this is an experimental dish that will probably be gone by next month. So be quick!
The star dish is a 100% beef hamburger patty topped with their famous seasoned fries.
That’s not all; it also includes melted cheddar cheese, ranch, and crispy bacon crumbles. Served in the middle of two classic toasted sesame seed buns.
Basically, lettuce was replaced by these fries. But does it taste any good? Well duh! Obviously, it does. These fries are the core of all fast food.
No one can eat a burger without a bag full of fries. And the caviar is that now you can eat both of them at the same time!
It saves time greatly, and all you need to focus on is chewing through the heavenly juice dropped by the patty and the fries.
Once again, an unusual combination that outperforms our expectations. Next up was another classic dish, 5 Piece Classic Wings with Garlic Parmesan Coating.
Get Ranch Dipping Sauce; it costs extra for some reason. Anyway, it’s just 80 cents, so it’s not that big of a deal.
But these wings definitely fall under the Big Deal category. Small but massive punch.
The garlic parmesan, in particular, has a naturally spicy flavor that is not as dominant as other hot flavors. And yet it burned my soul quite a lot!

Final Thoughts
The number of dishes is quite underwhelming. You’ll normally expect a lot of items from a company that operates two kinds of chains.
They even absorbed 3–4 companies in the past, and yet the Checkers and Rally’s menu is limited to a few dozen items.
Combo meals are always welcomed, which is probably the main reason behind its survival until now. But how long will it last? Only time can tell.
We can only say this much: both Checkers and Rally’s can do much more than what they are doing now. Exclusive items and unique ideas for starters instead of two peas in a pot!
At least the food tasted great. Almost all dishes have some wicked charm to them, and we’ll definitely come back to try them sooner or later.
