Cotton Patch Cafe History
This chain was founded by Larry Marshall and Michael Patranella in 1989 at North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas.
The building was rented from Wright Properties. Both founders had great experience in Texas. The community was thriving, and every household had many family recipes that transcended the everyday casual meal at any restaurant.
In fact, many special dishes that we see today have been donated by the many residents of Nacogdoches. Some were lost over time, but most are still served to this day.
The main goal of this chain was to serve the original recipes with little to no alterations. This did not cause any problem at the time, since most products were affordable.
But as time progressed and the modern era arrived, the financial problems started occurring. The biggest one can be seen in the Covid era.
Cotton Patch heavily relies on in-person service. This means eating at their venus is the best way to get the most out of it.
Unfortunately, the COVID lockdown prevented that, and as a result, many locations were closed off indefinitely.
For example, Siloam Springs, Ada, Ardmore, Broken Arrow, Claremore, and Springdale locations are now permanently closed.
Anyway, that’s that; now let’s see where the name comes from. You heard countless times that it is inspired by Texas. And what does Texas know?
Well, it’s the cotton production. The farmlands are filled with cotton patches, and that’s where the name comes from.
Cafe means it mainly aims to serve breakfast meals. But over time, lunch items were also added, as with any cafe of this era.
Overall, now this casual dining restaurant is limited to Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. There are no signs of reopening in any closed areas. Maybe it’ll happen in the future, but nothing is set in stone.
Cotton Patch Cafe Review

Our journey began with the new $12 meal combos. It includes a toned-down version of the main meals, which usually cost more than 15 bucks.
Anyways, the first one is the blackened tilapia. Tilapia is a freshwater fish with a questionable reputation. It’s known to have omega-6 in by a huge margin.
You can do a quick Google search and see if it serves you right or not. We don’t mind it since we rarely eat this fish.
This dish uses two blackened tilapia fillets, seasoned rice, and two sides of your choice. We went for Broccoli Rice Casserole and Garlic Mashed Potato.
Some cost 50 cents or more. As for the fish itself, it has a unique flavor. I usually eat salmon, which is rich in omega-3.
It has omega-6, and probably that’s why it tastes like this. The fat portion is also super low. Both combined give only 6 grams, while salmon can provide 30 or more.
Again, we encourage you to do some quick research before ordering this. Overall, it’s a great dish. A new flavor is now added to my arsenal.
Next up is the Chipotle Maple Chicken. It’s a sweet and spicy delight that comes with two sides. The base protein is two grilled and boneless chicken breasts that are covered in their homemade chipotle maple glaze.
This maple glaze is the real deal that gives the chicken breast its unique flavor and texture. And man, oh man! This chicken is truly marvelous.
The sweetness hits hard on the first bite. And right when you think it’s over, the spicy layer kicks in and starts an entirely new experience.

It’s a common delicacy that most modern chains have forgotten. It’s a shame that COVID forced Cotton Patch to close a lot of locations.
They pulled over at the right moment. And that was the best decision since restarting at those locations after the lockdown would have been difficult.
And who knows, maybe they would’ve fallen under the bankruptcy drama. As for the ratings, we would love to give them a solid 10 out of 10.
