Crown Burgers History

Crown Burgers was the birthplace of the jobless family of John and Rula Katzourakis. We called it “Jobless” because this idea came right after both of them lost their jobs.

After that, they decided to start their own business, especially on the fast food side since their last job was about making street foods.

So along with Rula’s brother, Nick Katsanevas, three pairs opened their first restaurant and named it Crown Burgers.

It was in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1978. This city has deep roots in the Greek immigrants who fled to our country a while ago.

They were known for their food stands, selling what we now call fast food or TexMex-style products. The best example of that would be tacos.

Crown Burgers tries to memorize that legacy by adding diverse items to its menu, especially Greek gyros and its own dipping sauce made from Ketchup.

Its signature dish is a simpler version of a pastrami burger that uses hot pastrami as the protein choice. It’s made from beef brisket and probably came from Romania.

Katsanevas’ family learned to make it from a man from Los Angeles with a slight Turkish accent. First, a relative of the founders started serving it at Minos Burgers in Anaheim, California.

Then the founder learned the recipe and decided to include it in his upcoming business venture, which was obviously Crown Burgers.

It was an instant hit and soon renamed itself as the signature dish of Crown Burgers. This pastrami burger then became a staple in Utah.

Making its way into many small to large restaurants in the town. Now Utah can be called the hotspot of pastrami burgers.

As of today, Crown Burgers has 8 locations in total, out of which 5 are located in Salt Lake alone.

Crown Burgers Review

Do you still have any questions regarding Crown Burgers’ menu or prices? Well, let us clear that up in this review section of ours.

We went to the heart of Utah, Salt Lake, and eventually made our way to 377 E 200 S, where Crown Burgers resides.

We immediately saw their signature dish at the top and ordered it. Crown Burger had that pastrami inside, which is again made out of beef.

So don’t be worried about the ingredients; they are basically the regular things that you eat. Like a Thousand Island dressing, lettuce, onion, American cheese, and tomato.

Pastrami may sound a bit weird, but our taste buds can immediately identify it as a steak dish. Anyway, it was quite large—larger than any cheeseburger we have had so far.

Pastrami was generously filled; there were no questions about that. The pastrami-to-vegetable ratio was somewhere around three to one.

Anyway, what matters most is the taste and texture. In fact, it was quite good too. We won’t say it was mind-blowing, but it was definitely a well-deserved cheeseburger.

The texture was smooth, and the host paste was quite appetizing. It was salty and hot, as always. Make sure to eat it while it’s still hot because it’ll get a bit soggy otherwise.

You can also swap the pastrami for something else, like bacon or even eggs. But yeah, try their signature dish at least once; it’s a burger worthy of your praise.

Next up was another famous dish from this town, called Gyro. Chicken Gyro, to be exact, and it basically stands in the middle of a burrito and a wrap.

The gyro base was garnished with red onion, tomato, and tzatziki. Nothing extraordinary, just a simple roll with simple ingredients.

Final Thoughts

As per our experience, Crown Burgers doesn’t stand that much. Sure, it has a few selling points, like their signature burger, but still, it didn’t feel overwhelming in any way.

Just well-made food and most well-made foods with fresh ingredients taste good. That’s how science works: good food will taste good.

Apart from that, the dipping sauce, or fry sauce, was something to die for. We had one fill of fries that came with that sauce.

And yeah, it was truly a worthy challenge overall. In short, if you are looking for a good restaurant with good portions and healthy ingredients, then look no further than Crown Burgers.
