Dixie Chili And Deli History
This brand was founded by a Greek immigrant named Nicholas Sarakatsannis all the way back in 1929.
He arrived in the USA at the age of 15. His main reason was to make money and send some home to his widowed mother.
He only made a single dollar a day at a shoe factory and cotton mill in New Hampshire. It is equivalent to 14 bucks.
In 1917, he came to Cincinnati in search of more work. He met a familiar face who landed him a position in a candy factory.
It was a challenging place that made their work from 6 AM to 11 PM daily with zero holidays. Yes, you heard it right; it was a common occurrence at that age.
Now most youngsters can’t even work for 8 hours a day and will regularly complain about how bad it is. Just remember this: there was a time when people worked for 17 hours a day!
Anyways, he left that job after the factory denied his raise in 1919. Pretty much all workers left, and the factory was stranded with massive losses.
One thing led to another, and he returned to his homeland to visit his mother in 1925. With God’s grace, he also met his future wife, Melanthia, and returned to the USA as a husband.
They both raised six sons together. In 1928, he landed a job at Empress Chili Parlor as the chili maker.
He made nine gallons of chili on his first day of work. After just a year, he was confident that he could develop his own recipe.
Due to fear of competition, he left in search of a better place that wouldn’t have a tight rival. He eventually landed in Newport, Kentucky, where the first store was located.
