Donatos History
The original store was founded by Don Potts on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. The dates have been lost in history, but we know for sure that the recipes for this brand were developed by him.
Unfortunately, the business did not work out well. Due to his lack of knowledge of marketing and how to keep customers hooked.
So in 1963, he decided to sell it and live a retired life out of the money he got. The buyer was Ohio State sophomore Jim Grote, and he bought all rights to it for $1300.
Jim’s principles included using high-grade ingredients, hiring great people, and providing a well-behaved treatment for all customers to come.
These were the things that the original place lacked. And over time, it was fixed by the new owner, Jim. It took him more than 20 years to accomplish it, but it was a worthy attempt.
The first franchised location was established in 1991. He chose Zanesville, Ohio, as the prime location, and the brand has added pizza to its name.
So Donatos Pizza was acquired by none other than McDonald’s in 1999 as a hands-on experiment on a new concept.
Ultimately, the business model didn’t work out, and McDonald’s decided to focus on its main ideas. Jim, along with his daughter Jane, bought the majority of the stakes in Donatos.
In 2017, Jim invested a million dollars in BeeHex, a 3D food printing company with cutting-edge technology.
Next year, Donatos partnered with Red Robin, a chain known for its Gourmet Burgers and Brews, to sell its pizza in some of its outlets.
It was followed by four Red Robin restaurants in the same year. It included a contract where the secret-recipe dough would be made in the Ohia factories and delivered daily to each location.
Donatos Review
These thin-crust pizzas have some unique aspects to them. So make sure to check out Donatos menu with prices at least before ordering.
We started with the founder’s favorite. A giant $20 pizza that is loaded with sausages like never before.
At least no sane person will spill this much protein in one serving. Anyway, it had sausage simmered and marinated in the family recipe, shaved ham, banana peppers, and Heritage pepperoni.
Ingredients don’t sound fancy? But the minute we saw the pizza, we knew this thing was the real deal! It’s buffed to the core with over 20 slices of meat and serves dozens of veggies and seasoning that just makes your mouth watery.
The sauce has a unique flavor to it. It’s a bit spicy, and probably some herbs are added when it’s simmered.
Rest is just high-grade stuff that will always taste good, regardless of which you pick. The crust is as thin as experience, but it’s enough to not spill the content out.
And believe me, the stuff they put in is massive. No ordinary crust can handle it. Unless it’s made with a special recipe that makes it more durable than regular crusts.
Next up is a new dish called BBQ Chicken Wrap. It’s always interesting to see different dishes from the ones they are known for.
It’s a pizza-specialized store, and yet it serves burgers and other fast food dishes like it’s nothing. Probably because of Red Robin’s influence.
Anyhow, it was filled with sliced chicken breast dipped in BBQ sauce with lettuce, cheddar, tortilla strips, and ranch inside a tortilla.
But does it taste good? This one doesn’t have any signature stuff from Donatos. But still, I can say this for certain: It tastes fantastic!

Final Thoughts
Pizzas always had a great taste, regardless of who made them. I don’t know why, except for Pizza Hut, but their stuff feels super cheap.
Anyway, donatos have nothing in particular that stands out in a bad way. Pizza, in particular, is made extra well.
It costs extra too, but in all honesty, it is worth every penny. The crust has so many things that nobody would think twice about ordering a second.
Donatos serves only eight kinds of pizza. And all of them have the same level of stuff filled in.
Plus, we saw two dedicated pizzas for vegans. That’s just awesome. Vegans are mostly hated, but here in Donatos, you are welcomed with the same warm welcome as others.
