Great American Bagel History
This restaurant was founded by Wayne Flately in 1987. He used a cheaply tagged location in Westmont, Illinois, to start his venture.
Slowly, he started getting his well-deserved attention, thanks to his secret recipe and his skillfully made sandwiches.
He was well-rounded in all baking stuff and including a good amount of beverage options like smoothies sealed the deal for him.
The franchising began in 1994 with the help of Pat Ross, a retired veteran and founder of Ref Roast Beef. (formerly known as Rex Restaurants).
His franchising plans were considerably lower, as we heard, but a solid number can’t be found. But we know how much it costs now, and that’s $20000.
Not too shabby when considering how popular this franchise is. The Great American Bagel also has branches in Canada and some Middle Eastern lands.
But it has a twist! The American part of its name gets adapted to the country it is heading to. For example, the Canadian branch is called The Great Canadian Bagel.
As of last year, The Great American Bagel had about 52 stores across 12 states. Its Canadian branch has 14 and, as for the rest, no idea.
There is little to no information regarding this specific brand online. Especially about its struggles in the early days or the true motivation behind its creation.
But this much is certain: it didn’t go bankrupt even once or get sold to some other brands over the years. It has retained its private-owned status for as long as we can remember.
Over the years, The Great American Bagel menu has grown to include more diverse classes of items, like coffee, tea, and breakfast dishes.
Those are different from what the founder originally planned, but since people asked for them, he made them.
Great American Bagel Review
You must have a lot of questions about the Great American Bagel menu or prices! Well, that’s obvious since it’s an underrated one.
The first on our journey was a creamy delight called a cream cheese bagel. A toasted bagel with sweet cream cheese—what can be better than that?
Also, you can pick your favorite bagel style from the massive list they have. I went for chocolate chip personally, which will complement well with the creamy cheese we got.
And yeah, it tasted like no ordinary street bagels we had recently. The flavors were refined, the cheese tasted great, and the chocolate chips were generously spread across them all!
Just go for it! It’s the best-seller after all, and now we know why. Next up is their signature Denver Omelet. It’s a sandwich that is specially made for morning people.
You can have your choice of bagel, along with scrambled egg, ham, green pepper, onion, and American cheese as the main filling.
It has everything that a morning breakfast should have. Bacon and egg will give you both a physical and moral boost, and don’t worry about the taste; it’s freaking good!
The saltiness is just enough to die about, and the balance of all those veggies plus onions? Are you kidding me? That’s the dream combination I adore, and this one dish has it all.
This time I went for a plain bagel, so I could fully immerse myself in those two proteins without any random distractions. You can get the garlic one if you like—a mouth refresher, that’s for sure.
Last up was a mango smoothie, a simple fruit smoothie with no artificial coloring or additives. Overall, each item has its charm, and it’s a shame that we couldn’t eat more!

Final Thoughts
This much is certain: The Great American Bagel deserves a lot more fame than it has now.
The food tasted fantastic, and we had no idea how this one stayed under the radar for so long. Maybe because the name is too fancy?
Still, there’s no way that the overall numbers stayed about 50 over all these years. Anyway, we hope to see a lot more growth in its home region.
We know the Canadian and Middle Eastern regions are booming, but the numbers stayed pretty much the same for the most part.
In the end, we hoped to have a good time, and we had a good time. The Great American Bagel gets full points this time and more for its well-made fruit smoothie.
