Long John Silver’s History
Jim Patterson founded this restaurant on August 18, 1969, in Lexington, Kentucky. This location was previously owned by a Cape Codder seafood carry-out restaurant.
Therefore, it had the look of its predecessor, with a blue roof, wooden tables, lobster pots, etc. It was perfect for Long John Silver’s since their own theme matches this one.
The building got its LJS-style decorations slowly, like seats made to look like nautical flags. A pirate kind of theme that was adapted to most of its locations.
Singapore was the first international location, which is still present to this day. Long John Silver’s opened their first store in 1983.
LJS also had larger halls than other seafood restaurants. It had separate entry and exit doors, a corridor waiting area, and a kitchen area that was right at the dinner area.
So everyone can see how their plates are made. This transparency of conduct later became one of the most unique aspects of Long John Silver’s.
And yeah, the name and entire premise are inspired by the original Treasure Island novel, written by Robert Louis Stevenson.
For the next few decades, Long John Silver experienced the traditional business grind of acquisition and bankruptcy.
Until Bob Jenkins broke this streak with a group of investors, he was a long-timer in this franchise, and he is also the president of Charter Foods.
Under the name Four Oaks Partners, Long John Silver’s was officially acquired in November 2022.
In 2013, a health inspection group called the Center for Science in the Public Interest inspected one of their meals called “Big Catch.”.
The conclusion was devastating, and they rated it as the worst food restaurant in America. The dish contained a lot of salt, trans fat, and saturated fat, which are known to destroy your health.

Anyway, our crew picked 1906 W. Bell Road for this review. It’s a flagship location that offers both in-house and third-party delivery services.
There were a lot of dishes on the recommended list. The fish and shrimp plate turned out to be the first one for us.
This massive dish is made with multiple main dishes that this restaurant serves. A typical sample platter that only costs $15 at most.
It comes with two giant pieces of Alaska pollock, hand-battered and fried to perfection in the classic Long John Silver’s style.
And six pieces of shrimp made with the same delectable style. Two sides and two hushpuppies are also included as the final touch.
The taste is definitely beyond what we originally expected. The batter is so well made that it somehow tastes better than the meat.
Sounds weird, right? Well, it’s just a personal opinion. The meat part is as good as the batter part, perfectly salty, and goes super well with the tartar sauce.
Shrimp works more like a side dish. Fluffy meat that doesn’t ask for a lot of effort like Pollock.
Long John Silver’s menu has an item called Add-A-Piece. It’s basically a smaller version of all the main dishes combined.
Whether it be chicken, fish, or clams, everything can be ordered from this category as a side dish. It saves both time and effort, so we went for that.
We ordered chicken and clams. Both dishes were made with the same ingredients as before. The chicken was good—nothing too fancy. But the Clam, on the other hand, was exceptionally well made.

Final Thoughts
Long John Silver’s has some of the best seafood in the form of fast food. Seafoods are considered a premium dish, but LJS says no to that.
Their version of seafood isn’t just cost-effective; it also tastes as good as any other fried delicacy that you might know.
These crispy shrimps are so good that no one can resist the urge for seconds. Especially the Add-A-Piece category gives us a safer alternative to tasting the main dishes without investing $15.
On the surface, it looks cheap, but believe me, this one hits harder than the combo dishes. These come in smaller portions, and it’ll cost more for the same portion as the combo. Even double on most occasions.
