Marco’s Pizza History

This chain was founded by Pasquale “Pat” Giammarco, an Italian immigrant who was born in Sulmona.

He moved to Dearborn, Michigan, when he was just 9 years old. In his family’s pizzeria, he worked with his father, learning everything about pizza.

That father-son combo developed the secret sauce that was used in Marco’s Pizza Restaurant.

He grew up to adore the Italian pizzas that his father was making. Along with a mix of Italian American-style pizzas that were more catered towards US citizens.

Both had their charm, but he always preferred his original Italian recipes. Anyways, the big day came on February 18, 1978.

He loved Italian pizzas, but if he were to start a business in America, then he must use recipes that are made for Americans.

That’s why he changed his mind and went on with the Italian American style for his restaurant. And we know that was the best decision because now Marco’s Pizza has about 1052 locations across four countries.

The expansion didn’t happen until early 2000 when industry expert Jack Butorac was asked to review three major restaurant concepts.

One of them was Marco’s Pizza. On his tour, he immediately noticed an inconsistency in the marketing, the building, and everything else.

Except for the food, which he always found to be delicious. Pat didn’t have any franchising knowledge, so Jack negotiated with him and took over the franchise rights in 2004.

The expansion plan was initiated in 2005, and Jack was promoted to both Chairman and the position of CEO for his excellent work.

It’s no surprise that he turned Marco’s Pizza into a multinational company. And if that fateful encounter never happened, we may have never had the chance to review it.

Now comes the most-awaited part of this article. But first, make sure to have a quick look at Marco’s pizza menu prices given above.

Let’s start with the Deluxe Pizza, which is steadily available across all locations. Also, it’s the best way to test out whether the next order would be good or not.

It uses a variety of ingredients. Such as mushrooms, pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers, and onions.

You’ll also get their original sauce along with the signature three cheeses. The last one is just a gimmick because the base package doesn’t include it.

So paying extra is the only way. And yet the pizza didn’t taste any bad without all three cheeses. In fact, it tastes fantastic. It’s served fresh along with their aromatic sauce that tastes and smells like heaven.

It’s a great start, and now we can say that the next one would also be great. So, let’s see how it goes.

Next up is Garden Bowl. It’s a pizza in a bowl. The concept already sounds weird, but does it taste good?

It is a crustless pizza that takes full advantage of mushrooms, onions, black olives, and sliced tomatoes topped with feta cheese.

No crust means no pressure to eat the outer layer. Plus, now you can use a spoon instead of your hands. Pretty neat if you ask me.

And the flavors, wow! No doubt it’s way better than the deluxe pizza. It doesn’t have any crust, and that only brings forth the real ingredients at their full might.

Each bite is filled with a sweet and sour experience that just makes you eat more and more. Well, two pizzas are all I can handle for now. Lastly, I had a Dr Pepper, and the tour met its end.

Final Thoughts

As far as I can see, Marco’s Pizza takes full advantage of fresh vegetables. The meat portion wasn’t as excessive as other pizza chains love to make.

Thanks to that, each slice retained a smooth flavor that wouldn’t go haywire. The building also looks clean, and we can thank Jack for that.

The chain grew so much with his supervision. I can’t even imagine how bad the outlook was back in the 2000s. But we can see that it leveled up a lot over these past few years.

So, what kind of numbers should we give them? After some back and forth, we finally landed on 9.5/10. Yes, it’s a perfect place to have some authentic pizzas.
