McAlister’s Deli History
This chain was founded by Don Newcomb, a simple man who happened to start a business at a renovated gas station.
Many of the past remnants were clearly visible in his place, which eventually became the signature look.
For example, garage doors, black and white tiles, and so on. If you are wondering about his past, then the answer is no; he doesn’t have any kind of chef background.
In fact, he can’t even make the most of what McAlister’s Deli offers. But he had a vision to turn an abandoned movie set into a small but fine restaurant.
He was a dentist in Oxford, so these kinds of dreams aren’t what most dentists dream of. Still, he took his chances and started the business in 1989.
McAlister’s Deli menu at the time featured sandwiches, spuds, salads, and obviously their family Sweet Tea.
Overall, the business was booming, and people quite adored his sweet tea. Some asked him to increase the portion so they could take it in bulk.
That’s when Newcomb added the gallon options for their sweet tea, and yeah, it destroyed his dream of running a small and peaceful restaurant once and for all.
Before he knew it, his chain started growing, and by 2001, it had over 45 locations in nine states in America.
He wasn’t cut out for serious management stuff, so he sold his chain to CEO Michael J. Stack and executive Philip Friedman.
He took over the position of CEO for quite a while before leaving it and staying as a board director. Anyway, in 2005, Roark Capital Management, LLC, acquired McAlister’s Deli
It had about 170 locations in 19 states at the time of the enclosure. Currently, it’s owned by GoTo Foods, formerly known as Focus Brands, along with many others.
McAlister’s Deli Review
Still, I have lots of doubts regarding the McAlister’s Deli menu or prices. You should be. The main question should be: How good is their food? And is it worth trying out?
Well, that’s our job, and our first target answered both of them. Its name was Cuban, a sandwich wannabe with ham and pulled pork.
It comes with Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles, packed in a compact sandwich kind of way with a lot more ingredients than you can hope for.
With a cup of soup as a side, this dish is just perfect for anything of the day. It contains both a good amount of protein and veggies for that balanced moment.
The soup will act as a taste enhancer for the remainder of the time. In short, this dish definitely proved the worth of McAlister’s Deli.
Next up is a signature dish. Since we just had a sandwich, kind of, it’s about time we head for their potato spuds.
There were about six of them, and in the end, I picked the one with chili chicken and bacon. This is a fascinating combination; let’s see what kind of flavor this one brings.
The main highlight of this dish is definitely the grilled chicken and bacon. Apart from that, it was showered with cheddar jack, chipotle ranch, and green onions.
All that inside a giant spud, turning it into a decorative masterpiece. But the first bite made it clear that this is by far the best of what we have had so far. Cuban is nothing against this, and the grilled chicken with Chipotle Ranch just tastes heavenly.
Ham has a great texture and doesn’t taste weird, despite being in the middle of four dominant flavors. It managed to make its presence known with a boom!
