Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant History
It was founded in 1954 by Pepe and Maria Lopez in a quiet place in Chicago. It offered traditional Mexican cuisines like tacos and nachos at the time.
Also known as a taqueria, which means a Mexican restaurant specializing in selling tacos. Anyway, the original booth was temporary; at least they hoped it would be.
Original recipes tend to attract a lot of attention over time, and as the loyal fan base went off the roof, Pepe’s had no choice but to open a restaurant.
Two big guys chose a good spot in Chicago, both good for their wallets and not so far from their original location.
At this point, Pepe’s has become more than just a regular food business; it’s a Chicago original famous for its wide range of Mexican delicacies.
Especially Taco, since that’s what gave them the push they needed. But slowly, meals and drink options were introduced.
Franchising began in 1967 with Mario Dovalina and Edwin Ptak. All franchised ones are independently owned and managed.
Giving them the freedom to choose what to serve or not. By the end of the 20th century, Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant had over 30 franchised locations.
They also built a big food production factory in a 57,000-square-foot U.S. commissary. Here they produced their signature sauce and other dishes.
Which were later delivered to their franchised locations over the road. It also sells food to other parties like the Army, schools, factories, and so on.
Pepe’s expanded its reach from Chicago to Northwest Indiana soon after. Mostly encouraged by the franchise owners, who were eager to display this masterpiece in their hometown.
Overall, Pepe’s succeeded in achieving its goal of serving quality Mexican food to millions. As of today, Pepe’s has about 32 franchised locations, of which 10 are located in Chicago.
Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant Review
Still curious about Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant menu or prices? You should be; all these reputations and good talk can make anyone curious.
Just so you know, most locations will have slightly different variations of each item. It’s common in independently owned businesses.
Anyway, our team heads over to the popular spot in Chicago to experience their so-called “Chicago Originals.”.
Our food journey started with their version of the sample platter, called Botana Chica.
It included taquitos, mini-flautas, and nachos. All of which were topped with guacamole and sour cream.
Each item had a good amount of filling, and yeah, they did smell good at first, but the fragrance just exploded the minute we broke out the outer layer.
The homemade tomato ketchup was sweet, and with sour cream, it just went above and beyond. Tacos and mini flautas definitely have the same vibe to them.
Everything is going smoothly for now. Salty flavors are on point this time; the taste remains the same throughout the serving and doesn’t change drastically.
Well, now we know which one to order next, and that’s steak nachos. Yup, nachos were the best overall on that platter.
Surprisingly, this food dish came in massive portions. Well, the price gave that away anyway, but still, huge, generous portions!
It comes with tortilla chips with fried beans, Chihuahua cheese, and melted cheddar. As for toppings, it had grilled steak, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and Mexican cheese.
Side items came like the first one we had: guacamole and sour cream. And man, oh man, this was truly the best!
Everything was on point, and the steak was grilled well to the point where you only need to bite twice before it’s perfectly crumbled.
Meanwhile, tomatoes, lettuce, and onions, along with melted cheddar, turned this dish into a pure sensation!

Pepe’s has managed to survive all this time, and we can thank its uniquely driven food recipes that have stayed the best since day one.
Also, all locations are free to make their own decisions, which gave birth to many new dishes that we see today.
And yeah, all those vegan people can also enjoy their meal because they have a dedicated vegetarian menu!
Apart from that dinner, kids meals and some locations serve alcohol too. In the end, we hopped for a good time, and we had a good time.
