Perkins Restaurant & Bakery History

It all began in 1957 with Matt and Ivan Perkins. They opened their first bakery in Cincinnati, Ohio, and named it Smithies Pancake House.

It was a pancake house offering more than a dozen pancakes, waffles, buttermilk, etc. Their favorable tastes were so good that it became a massive hit over time.

By the end of the year, they had more than they could ask for and eventually ended up expanding their business.

Franchising began next year in Minnesota, and this was the first time Perkins included anything other than sweets.

This franchised location offered casual meals, turning an ordinary bakery into a restaurant. The business was renamed Perkins Pancake House soon after.

Wyman Nelson was the guy behind the first chain, and he heavily advertised Perkins, including full-day meals, which were his idea to begin with.

From 69 to 78, Nelson consolidated Perkins & Smitty’s efforts to work together under the name Perkin “Cake & Steak.” He assumed this growth streak would have a nationwide effect.

And he had hoped to achieve over 200 franchised locations over the year. In 1979, the founders retired and sold off the rights to trademarks and everything else.

In August of that year, Perkins was bought off by Holiday Inn, founded by Charles Kemmons Wilson.

In 1985, an active member of the Board of Directors named Donald N. Smith purchased the ownership interest in Perkins.

Then he became chairman of the board and, eventually, CEO of Perkins. Matt Perkins, one of the founding fathers, died of a heart attack in 1991.

He was 79 years old, and his creation had over 460 franchised locations across 32 states in America.

Perkins has seen many changes since then; many were branched off, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice, acquisitions, and so on.

Perkins Restaurant & Bakery Review

All doubts about Perkins Restaurant & Bakery’s menu or prices should be cleared by now. Most items look pretty straightforward and fall under the casual dining category.

Anyway, our first meal for this review was the 16-dollar worth of the Everything Omelette. It’s a sample platter, including everything that Perkins has to offer.

For example, diced grilled ham and a big omelet made with mushrooms, onions, green peppers, tomatoes, and American cheese.

It also comes with three buttermilk pancakes. It is quite a feat if you ask me, and the best part about it is that you can swap almost everything and turn it into an entirely different dish.

We swapped the pancakes for an apple cinnamon mammoth muffin, an original recipe from Perkins.

Swap out mushrooms too; overall, it tastes great, but it can be even more entertaining with a different combination.

The grilled ham and omelet were well made; the omelet was cooked on both sides, which is not the usual thing in town.

Next up is Classic Cheeseburger, a cult classic that never wavers even in the toughest times! At least not this time, and this was as big as it could get.

Filled with layers and layers of sweet red onions, Cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pickles in between two brioche buns.

And the star of the show is the homegrown Angus beef made with medium flames. It comes with side fries or a soup made hot daily between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Mostly breakfast or bakery meals are on the banner, but this one is definitely by far the greatest we had in Perkins.

Maybe other burgers also taste this good, or maybe better—who knows? But as for now, this cult classic takes the win!
