Port of Subs History
It was founded by two brothers from New Jersey in 1972 at Sparks, Nevada. They both worked diligently and made their name for quality products.
Just a few years later, John Larsen and his family took a keen interest in his chain and offered two brothers to buy it.
They immediately said yes, and in 1975, John officially became the new owner of Sub Shop. Later, he renamed it Port of Subs as we know it today.
But the real popularity came in a community-wide contest of eating submarines. More than 10,000 contestants participated, and it quickly caught the eyes of many.
In fact, the brand was renamed right after the contest. The port was inspired by the actual ports. Where ships of all shapes and sizes gather.
It can also be seen as a hub or center of all things submarine-related. After the contest, the company started opening one store each year.
The peak numbers go all the way up to 145. Initially, it was just an ordinary submarine shop. But over the years, with countless reviews, The Port of Subs started enhancing its quality.
By using fresh ingredients and preparing them after the order has been placed. The company also offered delivery service soon after and a better venue.
Most restaurants would rush their growth at this point. But John had different plans. It only focused on one location at a time. And when the location was ready to work independently, he moved on to the next one.
That’s how it became a regional chain that can be seen flourishing in Nevada, Idaho, California, Utah, Arizona, Oregon, and Washington.
In 2023, The Port of Subs was acquired by Area 15 Ventures, LLC, an investment firm dedicated to developing small chains.
Port of Subs Review
Before moving on, make sure to have a quick look at Port of Subs menu prices. There won’t be any major price difference since it’s centered around one region. But unexpected discounts are expected!
First on our list is the Classic Sub number 4, which is made with Ham, Salami, Shredded Iceberg, Tomatoes, Onions, and Provolone Cheese. Well, it’s a cult classic, alright.
The 8-inch sub only costs 8 bucks. And you can choose 4 sauces for some creative formula. The level of freedom Port of Subs has is incredible.
Here all that matters is the quality of the ingredients. Rest is thrown onto you to decide. You can make it into a unique sub made for none other than you.
Or a weird combination that may taste harsher than usual. Anyway, it’s the customer’s call. We went for the usual, and it clearly tasted great.
The ingredients were fresh, and that gave it a flavor boost. Next up is the Peppered Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Sub.
It’s a breakfast special edition that literally combines the morning proteins in between two hard breads. Well, what can go wrong?
As the name says, it’ll include peppered bacon, eggs, and your choice of cheese inside a perfectly grilled bread that you can also choose.
That’s the best part about submarines. You can customize it in any way you want and still end up with a reasonable good or a great sub.
And yet again, it tastes superb. Mainly the bacon and egg make up 99% of the flavors. Still, I can’t deny how crunchy the bread is.
Overall, both subs were fantastic. Not unique flavors, but a top-quality experience that is clearly made by professionals. Lastly, I had a few drinks, and we were ready to go!

Final Thoughts
The Port of Subs is truly the Port of Subs! There were so many kinds of submarines that we lost count midway and randomly picked whichever came to mind.
I’ll have to say that the breakfast edition was a great surprise. It was the first time for me to eat a breakfast-quality meal inside a loaf of bread. It felt unique, like the fish tacos a while back.
As far as the ratings go. We are delighted to give them a solid 10/10. A great place if you live in the western region. The prices are so affordable that you can have it twice a day without emptying your wallet.
