Quaker Steak & Lube History
This chain was founded in the middle of the 1973 oil crisis when OAPEC levied a total oil embargo against countries supporting Israel.
Well, we won’t go into too much detail about that oil crisis, but remember that it didn’t stop Americans from moving forward.
Many things changed, from low oil consumption to making efficient car engines. That slowly killed old, vintage cars that used high-power motor engines.
The same goes for gas stations, which were permanently closed due to a lack of oil. Jig Warren and Mo Meszaros wanted to preserve these memories.
Therefore, both decided to start a restaurant displaying these past relics on its premises. They used an abandoned gas statue in the downtown area of Sharon.
Along with a few muscle cars that were pretty much done for at this point. Major renovations were made, and the car was placed on top of the restaurant, using it as a banner or trademark that can be seen from far away.
But did you know that there was a lot of backlash for picking Quaker as the base name? It resonates with Quakers, a religious society.
They definitely sound similar, but the claim was denounced later on, saying they do not partake in or promote any religious groups within their premises.
It’s all about preserving memories that were lost over time, like gas statues and high-powered muscle cars.
Anyway, the original location was established one year later, and it included an original 1936 Chevrolet for the display.
It was a big hit for its unique way of displaying the old days, and more locations started popping up one after another.
All locations had one of multiple old relics displayed within their building. Motorcycles were hung on the wall, while cars were displayed majestically in a larger space.
Quaker Steak & Lube Review
We went to the great Bloomsburg location that was opened in 2006. This is the perfect place to clear all doubts regarding the Quaker Steak & Lube menu and prices.
The journey began with garlic white cheddar cheese curds. This fluffy guy is made with lightly dusted white cheddar curds and flash-fried.
Seasoned with garlic and served with marinara sauce. These cubic-shaped appetizers feel quite fluffy, as expected.
Just crush it instead of biting, extracting all the good juices out before chewing down the remaining parts with a pinch of Marinara sauce.
Mouthwatering indeed, and the perfect way to start a meal. Next up is Cauliflower “Wings.” An interesting turn to your daily wings!
These crunchy and juicy cauliflower braided wigs don’t come cheap. But the way it’s made makes it totally worth it.
And as a bonus, we can have our choice of Lube® sauce! Louisiana Lickers is the best one on the list. Dusted mango habanero is the second best; choose whichever you like.
We ordered two sets of Mango Habanero and Louisiana Lickers. These hell wings are really crunchy. Usually, only the outer layer breaks with a sound.
But here, even the inside part has a bit of a crunchy side to it. Thanks to that, the sauce gets absorbed immediately to the very center, giving you the best flavors you can ask for.
No wonder it’s called Award-winning Wings! 100% deserving of its title. Last up was a weird dessert dish called Skillet Apple Nachos.
Nachos as a dessert? Count me in! The taco part is made with cinnamon apples. As for the side dish, it is filled with vanilla bean ice cream and caramel.
Plus some crispy fried cinnamon crisps—a sea of sugary delight in a Tex-Mex way. Doesn’t that just sound lovely?

Final Thoughts
Well, this chain definitely has its charm. Especially in its wings and its large variety of sauces. Half of them are usually average, but the other half have some serious firepower.
Quaker Steak & Lube has about 40 or more locations working under him. Vintage cars were dirt cheap when it was founded, but as time progressed, the auction price started rampaging.
As a result, the company had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015. Still, as per our experience, Quaker seems to have a lot of potential. Its vintage relics aren’t just beautiful but also expensive. Despite all that, their food still tastes good.
