Salsarita’s History
It was founded by Bruce Willette in the year 2000. But the reign wouldn’t begin until 2011 when they held a conference for possible investors.
A restaurant finance and development conference was held around the same time, and many business owners were there.
Phil Friedman, a veteran in the restaurant and franchise industries, was also present at that very same conference.
He was a known name throughout the restaurant industry thanks to McAlister’s Deli. He was CEO of that chain, and he explained over 300 locations in his lifetime.
Anyway, everyone thought that this 65-year-old (at the time) had retired for good. But little did they know that Phil had ulterior motives.
In that conference, he had the thought, “What if I start small again?” Probably with funding or even a complete acquisition.
This led to two possible candidates, but in the end, Salsarita won. He saw a future in this rather compact Tex-Mex category, and that’s why it got the first place.
Then, in 2011, he officially acquired the chain and started franchising it immediately. From that day on, Salsarita’s locations have been expanded all over America.
Now you can even use Salsarita’s catering service if you want. Online delivery? Well, no problem there. What about drive-thru? Well, that’s available too.
Phil wants to compete with the big boys in this category, and he probably will. In the end, all that matters is experience, and our guy has it all.
Did you know that there was also one more key person behind his decision? Well, that man was Davis, one of Phil’s close friends.
Davis suggested Salsarita’s to him, which then shifted his focus. We think this small suggestion played a big role in the future of this growing chain.
Salsarita’s Review
Now let’s have a look at Salsarita’s menu items worth trying. As always, remember that prices will fluctuate based on time and situation.
Anyway, Salsarita’s menu is divided into six main categories: burritos, bowls, quartos, tacos, quesadillas, and salads.
We immediately shifted our focus toward the salad part. Because the Tex-Mex industry isn’t known for that specific section.
It’s all about greasy fast food with steaks. Anyway, it had only one choice, which was the burritos.
Well, at least they have one; that’s enough for us, so we had one of these with Fajitas Veggies. The flour was smooth and filling, giving it the flavor that everyone loved.
Also, there were more choices for fillings, so we added brown rice, pinto beans, tomato, cheese, etc. with mango habanero sauce.
Despite having just one menu, the choices of fillings and side dishes were extremely generous. And the best part is that you can directly ask to add protein to it.
Making it a good choice for both vegan and non-vegan people alike. Anyway, this was nowhere near killing our hunger.
The next target was an interesting menu called Burrito Bowl. Yup, you heard it right—all the goodies of a burrito are inside a bowl instead of a tortilla.
This had virtually the same choices as the first one; the only addition was the portion. Since it came in a bowl, we enjoyed a full lunch-style meal.
Our crew decided to make it a combo pack by adding chips, dip, and a 24-ounce fountain drink. You can exclude drinks if you want.
We went with the ladder since Salsarita’s had no specific beverage option. Our final contender was the dessert part.
And man, oh man, Honduran Chocolate Brownie was something else. The main ingredients were chocolate and an additive-free base.

Final Thoughts
We can say this for sure: Salsarita’s did not disappoint us. Some may argue that their menu has limited items.
Well, when compared to Tijuana Flats or Wahoo’s Fish Taco, it feels short in numbers. But the same can’t be said about their ingredients or taste.
There was not even a shred of unprofessionalism in their behavior. Meanwhile, the taste was top-notch, which shows why it grew so rapidly.
During the COVID era, Salsarita’s took a big hit. But thanks to their multiple ordering options, it somehow survived.
Salsarita’s has around 77 active locations currently. Most of them offer pick-up, delivery, dine-in, and drive-thru.
