Sbarro History
It was founded by the Sbarro family in 1956. The family included Gennaro and Carmela Sbarro, who are the father and mother of the family.
Along with their sons: Joseph, Mario, and Anthony. They migrated from Italy in the same year. After settling in New York City, they opened their first stall in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.
This was a grocery store that sold vegetables, fruits, and a few Italian fares from their homeland. Eventually, these Italian fares started attracting more attention than their groceries.
And that’s how the actual brand was realized. New locations opened in the metropolitan areas that featured pizzas and some side dishes along with usual groceries.
Over the years, groceries disappeared as they ended up in the pizzas and other Sbarro menu items. In the 70s, Sbarro entered the mall-based restaurant business.
The first one opened at Brooklyn’s Kings Plaza Shopping Center. And slowly they ended up at the World Trade Center after a few years.
We all know what happened in 2001, also known as 9/11. It destroyed many lives, along with Sbarro’s stores, which were the most grossing at the time.
The first international location was opened in the Philippines in the 90s. Now it has about 50 locations there with steady growth.
In 2007, MidOcean Partners acquired Sbarro. It started the expansion project at full throttle and eventually reached 600 in a few years.
More locations meant more expenses, and the company wasn’t ready for that. As a result, in 2011, Sbarro filed its first Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
It was the fifth-largest pizza chain in the US and also the third-largest to emerge from it in less than a year. The protection was filed on April 4, 2011, and the company emerged from it in November.
Sbarro Review

Sbarro Natick Mall seemed like the perfect stop for us. We had a few things to buy and some office restocks. Two birds with one stone!
Plus it was Friday, and on this day Sbarro menu included their weekly special 17″ NY Pepperoni for $20.99. It’s only available from midnight to noon, so be quick with those orders.
This is an extra-large New York-style pizza made with hand-stretched dough. This is the peak meal at Sbarro right now, and thank God it is Friday.
It was again topped with San Marzano-style tomato sauce, mozzarella, and pepperoni. And if you don’t know, mozzarella is made with 100% whole milk.
I have to say, this mozzarella is actually different than usual ones. It tastes refined, and the aroma is much stronger.
The tomato sauce is also crazy and has a super strong aroma. Probably made with organic tomatoes, which usually have more seeds than hybrid ones.
But honestly, an Extra Large for just 20 bucks? That’s crazy, and the weird part is that you can get it much cheaper on special occasions.
The NY team volunteered to try out the only veggie pizza on the list. It only comes in XL size, so we eventually canceled other ones.
So the veggie also used the same hand-stretched dough as the first one. Now I think all of them are hand-stretched. This may sound dull, but it’s a big move from their side.
It takes both time and effort. As for the toppings, you’ll get the same tomato sauce and mozzarella, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, green and red peppers, red onions, and tomatoes.

Final Thoughts
Pizzas have been an inseparable food for watching movies or having some deep bonding with someone. A pizza can make that same experience smoother, or worse, depending on the quality.
Sbarro takes pride in its superior-quality ingredients, and most of them are tweaked manually daily. Instead of mass-producing and freezing it out like most do.
There are expensive ingredients; it’s all staff and chefs who are doing the big work. And I respect them fully. The homemade mozzarella and hand-stretched dough add up and eventually transform the same old pizza into a flavor heaven.
Sbarro deserves much more praise than this, but this is enough for today. And the end result wouldn’t come as a surprise; yes, it gets 10/10.
