Swensen’s Grill And Ice Cream History
Earle Swensen founded this chain in 1948 in San Francisco. He previously served in the US Navy during World War II.
At that time, he learned how to cook for himself as everyone in the bunker followed a rotational duty of cooking, cleaning, and so on.
It’s a common way to get used to the place. And there he learned how to make ice cream for the first time. It’s given that his passion for frozen goodies began right there and then.
He said, “Ice cream is my life.” And he began his own shop right after the war ended. He placed it right around the corner of Union and Hyde Streets.
His favorite flavor was always vanilla, but as the demand went up, he added many other flavors with his own twist.
Some say he made more than 150 flavors all by himself. Their motto was “Good as Father Used to Make.” As the franchising began, more non-traditional products were added to the menus.
For example, other frozen desserts, sandwiches, and even burgers played a massive role in the making of Swensen’s Drive-thru.
Anyways, in 1970 he sold all the franchising rights to William Meyer and investors while retaining exclusive rights to his original store.
The original store is still being run by his offspring and can be seen in the exact same place. The scenery may be different, but the original flavors still retain the same level of greatness.
By the 1980s, the new management grew the chain to 400 locations and started expansion plans in foreign regions.
Mostly in Asian countries, Swensen’s Grill and Ice Cream gained a lot of fame. Unfortunately, the US division slowly started declining. Now only the original locations can be found.
Swensen’s Grill And Ice Cream Review
First of all, make sure to have a quick look at Swensen’s Grill and Ice Cream menu prices given above. So, our team traveled all the way to San Francisco. It was a good journey; the weather was good, and San Francisco is a lovely place.
Anyways, let’s cut to the chase. Our first item on the list is the Hot Fudge Bonanza Split. It’s a simple sundae that no one can say no to.
Made with the same vanilla ice cream the founder loved all his life. Along with hot fudge, almonds, fresh bananas, whipped cream, cherry, chocolate sprinkles, butterscotch, and wafer.
Don’t sweat the small stuff; mostly you’ll see four bananas, the ice cream, and the hot fudge at the end. The rest is sprinkled slightly for a faint flavor boost.
Otherwise, that’s not the main star of the show. Anyway, the ice cream in itself was superb. Bananas are just bananas, so nothing special about that.
But it did taste great with hot fudge. Make sure to think of it as a dipping sauce for those four slices of bananas.
I’ll say it’s a well-balanced banana split with a subtle effect. Ice cream was a bit too sweet for me; otherwise, you could give it a 10/10 right here and there.
Next up is Celebrity Brownies. Well, that will catch your eye one way or another. And yeah, it actually used brownies and ice cream. It’s like the hot & cold combo.
It had one warm brownie with a single scoop of the same vanilla ice cream as the first one. Along with a small layer of hot chocolate fudge, whipped cream, cherry, almonds, and a wafer.

Final Thoughts
Overall, it’s a fascinating place. The only problem is the limited place where it can serve. That’s a big bummer.
But if you can make it all the way to the original locations, then let us assure you that you will have a fantastic experience.
Also, this original place makes each dish slowly. This is a good thing because it shows each plate or each glass has been made with careful consideration.
As for the ratings, we will give it a solid 9 out of 10. The place, the atmosphere, and the frozen goodies all get full marks. But the traveling part does hurt a lot.
