Togo’s Sandwiches History
Togo’s sandwiches have a long history behind their making. It goes back to 1964 when two students opened their first stand-in restaurant.
Stand-in means there were no seats. Customers had to buy and then eat at their pleasure. In theory, it doesn’t sound that good, but let’s not forget it’s a sandwich.
All you need is two hands, and that’s it. It’s light and can be eaten in 3–5 bites. Anyway, the name TOGO is the combination of those two youngsters.
TO comes from Tom, and GO comes from Gordon. They opened their first store in Marquette, Michigan.
Despite their charisma, it didn’t last long when Tom decided to leave after just a year. Then the other founder sold it to Joseph Fountain.
This cycle of buying and selling went on for quite a while until David Nazarian’s Nimes Capital finally ended it in 2015.
They are the current owners of TOGO’s franchise, and it seems like it’ll go on for at least a few more years.
Reed also tried to open TOGOs multiple times, notably around his newly relocated residency in California. It was locally known as Togo’s Sandwiches California.
Togo’s had many owners in the past, and Reed saw no future in this business, so he sold it again and again in the hope of some profit from it.
Over the years, Togo’s style of sandwiches became a local delicacy, and its popularity started going crazy around the 21st century.
By 2001, TOGO had around 350 stores opened with over 25 different types of sandwiches to choose from.
Togo’s Sandwiches Review
Before diving into the main part, let’s learn what Togo’s style means. This was originally developed by the two founders that you guys just heard.
Their original recipe included tomatoes, lettuce, pepperoni, onions, and pickles. But soon, they started adding roasted beef, which was a huge hit.
There may be more, and we respect that; after all, secrets are what make it more worth trying. Anyway, Togo’s sandwiches currently have more than 50 options.
They range from chicken fillings to beef, veggies, cheese, and so on. We went with the roast beef one since their original dish had beef.
So it’s just fair that we start with the elephant in the room. We had the option to choose either medium-rare or hot-raised beef.
Hot-roasted beef was recommended by one of the waiters, so we went with that one. And let us tell you, it was so juicy that we couldn’t stop ordering seconds.
We also saw a few vegan options, like Greek Veggie. It had hummus, cucumbers, feta, and roasted red bells with balsamic dressing.
Remember that all menu items on this list will mostly be sandwiches or some other light fast food like chips and dips.
But the fillings are different. Due to popular demand, chicken fillings were added, like Brewpub Chicken and BBQ Chipotle Chicken.
Buffalo Chicken had a familiar trademark name in it: Frank’s RedHot®. This one came with pepper jack and ranch.
Thanks to the Chicken Wraps by KFC, now most fast food stalls also try to add these bad boys to their list.
So we had a quick look at Togo’s Sandwiches menu, and to our surprise, it was there. Anyway, if you need a full list of Togo’s Sandwich menu prices, then head over to the pricing section.

Final Thoughts
So what have we learned so far? It’s that TOGO’s hasn’t been successful since day 1. We can say that the founders lacked management talent.
We have seen many businesses rise from ashes thanks to their management staff. Anyway, now it’s in good hands, and it shows up in their 180 active locations.
This number was doubled at a time, but as always, Corona had a big impact on all business. Sandwiches are mostly eaten on the road rather than at home.
And that can be the reason why their sales shrank to smaller numbers around 2020. Anyway, now they are back on track, with more firepower than before.
If you don’t know where to find their location, open a web browser and type this in Google: “Togo’s sandwiches near me.”.
In the end, we had a fantastic time in their stores. Togo’s Sandwiches menu prices are reasonable for what they provide.
