Tumbleweed Tex Mex Grill History
George R. Keller and his wife opened this marvelous chain restaurant in 1975. This place was located right across the Ohio River.
This was a popular location for a long time, so it supported their newly opened store.
Tex-Mex or American Mexican-style foods have a variety of choices. Especially tacos that can be filled with any ingredients and still retain their original texture.
These bad boys cost quite a bit less. Tumbleweed Tex Mex Grill’s menu and prices made sure it’s not just easily accessible but also cost less.
This kind of thinking is what made their small store a big hit. Remember that not all businesses have a good start; some even sell their stores in just a year.
Meanwhile, Tumbleweed, on the other hand, thrives hard, and soon in 1978, a lady named Linda decided to convert their parents’ bar into a Tumbleweed restaurant.
This was a big step that gave rise to its own chain of restaurants. It was located in Louisville, and soon it turned itself into a flagship market.
The Keller family governed Tumbleweed up until 1995 when they decided to sell it off to a good investor. This one store has now become a big deal, and it was too much for their family to handle.
Sixty local area investors bought the entire franchise for $9.8 million and another one million in a clause to not compete with the new business owner.
The Keller family removed ties with Tumbleweed at this point, but it was just the beginning. Under the new reign, Tumbleweed went public with its offering.
Tumbleweed Tex Mex Grill Review
Enough history lesson; now it’s time for the real deal. Say hi to Tex Mex Nachos. Served with your choice of beef or chicken.
Then top with refried beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, chile con queso, jalapeños, lettuce, and sour cream sauce.
Tumbleweed Tex-Mex Grill’s menu mostly consists of different varieties of tacos. But over the years, many Mexican dishes have been added.
For example, Avocado White Chicken Chili. This is their famous white chicken chili, which is poured over fresh avocado.
It further adds handmade pico de gallo and their signature sour cream sauce. All are served in a crispy tortilla bowl with jalapeño cornbread.
Well, what about side dishes? Well, it has plenty to choose from. Like baked potatoes, skillet-grilled vegetables, fried corn on the cob, macaroni and cheese, etc.
Fajitas were pretty hot on the take. We saw a bunch of people buying it right in front of us. And the funny part was that those guys returned for seconds, like every hour.
From the Burrito section, we saw the Double-Topped Chicken Bacon Burrito as the most famous.
It was stuffed with mesquite-grilled chicken, bacon, and cheese, then topped with both enchilada sauce and their legendary chile con queso.
We had no idea that the Tumbleweed Tex Mex menu had one Italian-style dish in it. The dish was called Roasted Red Pepper Pasta.
The main ingredient was mesquite-grilled chicken, which was served over bowtie pasta with their house-made fire-roasted red pepper, cream sauce, and Texas toast.
There were a hundred different items on the list, and unfortunately, we had no time to try everything out. But this much is certain: whatever you’re looking for, it’ll be there.

Final Thoughts
Tumbleweed was one of the lucky franchises that had great people running it. The Keller family took good care of it up until it was sold for a hefty amount.
Tex-Mex was a new thing back then, but the future insight was what gave the Keller family the courage to move forward with their idea.
In fact, both married couples had no experience making Mexican food. So they bought dozens of cooking books and started experimenting.
We already mentioned a few of those in the review part. With new locations and new chefs behind the counter, more recipes were born.
Which shaped the current Tumbleweed Tex-Mex menu we know today. Anyway, if you ever stumble upon the Riversides of Indiana, then make sure to try it out.
