Wimpy History

Wimpy Inside

Edward Gold founded it in 1934 in Bloomington, Indiana. It was then called the Wimpy Grills, which took inspiration from an old cartoon series called Popeye.

The name is based on J. Wellington Wimpy, one of the dominant characters in the series before the debut of the spinach-eating sailor man.

The franchising began in 1936 after he expanded five locations in his regional area. Then he entered Chicago, where the chain would grow to 26 locations by 1947.

A famous newspaper named Chicago Tribune reported that the chain was selling 8 million burgers each year in the Chicago area only.

The international expansion began in 1954 when J. Lyons and Co. bought the franchising rights for the United Kingdom. Later, they both would create Wimpy’s International Inc., which was located in Chicago.

Gold was able to sell his rights to Lyons before his final rest. The chain peaked at around 25 in the domestic market.

But by the time of his death, it only had 7 locations remaining by 1977. No one came forth to claim the ownership of his US-based company.

Which led to its ultimate demise in its own domestic market. While the UK-based Wimpy grew to 1500 locations.

The US-based branch was then permanently shut down, and the UK-based Wimpy took over Wimpy’s International Inc. and started franchising in more countries.

By the 1970s, Lyons had expanded it into 23 countries with 1000 locations. The name changed to Mr. Wimpy in 1978, when the Popeye character was mentioned yet again.

The South African branch was by far the largest. So on 27 February 2007, Famous Brands, the owner of Wimpy ZA, acquired Wimpy UK. As of last year, only 64 restaurants remained in the UK.

Wimpy Review

First of all, let us remind you that this review would be a blind one. We’ll carefully consider public and online reviews.

But if you live in the UK or anywhere where Wimpy still serves, then make sure to have a quick look at your domestic Wimpy menu and prices.

So let’s begin with sausage and egg muffins. This is one of the famous items from the UK that directly rivals McDonald’s.

It uses a sausage patty along with a free-range fried egg. A classic breakfast combo that wouldn’t cost around 4 or 5 bucks.

You would also get a slice of cheese and a toasted muffin of your choice. And yeah, their signature Wimpy Ketchup or the sweet and sticky HP™ Brown Sauce.

By the looks of it, it looks pretty damn good. McDonald’s also has a similar dish, and overall both look appetizing enough.

Another famous item was the Original Quarter Pounder Cheese Meal. That’s a massive name that shows how big this burger would be.

As the name says, it uses a quarter-pounder patty for some big pangs of hunger. Along with cheese, lettuce, onion, and one of the sauces mentioned above.

Well, how can a meal be called a meal without any drinks or sides? Hell yeah, this dish also includes one side and a drink of your choice.

What would you pick? I would’ve gone for Chocolate Thick Shake and french fries or potato chips. In the UK, it costs roughly 15 pounds. And in dollars, it would cost 19.

Still, it’s a solid deal if you ask me. The meat portion is enormous, and paying 19 or even 20 bucks makes sense.

I also saw a tiny chicken wrap on their UK website. A mini-hunger killer for those unwanted burps just like KFC’s.

Final Thoughts

Overall, there is no sense in giving them any point. Since the chain died long before I was born. Heck, even my parents were still kids when the business went south.

Regardless, as far as I can see, Wimpy looks like a solid chain. It has a great foundation, and now it has completely converted into a counter-service establishment.

Fast food is the norm now, and I can imagine it might have become more successful here in the US. Only if someone took the responsibility to regrow it.

Unfortunately, not even a single soul came forth. It’s a sad story, but at least it is flourishing in other parts of the world. And we feel happy as long as they feel happy.
