Church’s Chicken History
George William Church, Sr., started this business in 1952. He was a 65-year-old retired chicken incubator salesman from San Antonio.
It’s a given that he had years and years of experience in how to prepare a chicken and how to make it Crave-Worthy.
The initial location was named Church’s Fried Chicken To-Go, and it was just one walk-in stall. He only sold fried chicken and egg rolls.
Two pieces of chicken and one egg roll only cost 49 cents at the time. More side dishes like jalapeños and fries were added in 1955.
Mr. William also wanted to make everything transparent about his way of working. So he put the fire right beside the order windows.
By the end of 1955, he had opened three more stalls around the corners of San Antonio, Texas. Then came the time for the biggest shock ever!
Mr. William’s sudden death in 1956 gave this small franchise a huge shock. He also had five children, but no worries; all of them were adults when this happened.
Now it was up to his offspring to continue the legacy. His family took over the business, and by 1962, Church’s Chicken had about eight outlets in San Antonio.
One of his brothers, Bill Church Jr., took over the position of top executive and started the expansion project in 1965.
To start with, Bill and Richard, two brothers, made the signature marinade that was later delivered to each franchised outlet.
J. David Bamberger, a former Vacuum Cleaner salesman, was an old acquaintance with the Church Jr. So he was offered the role of overseeing the franchise.
And he immediately said yes and began the operation in mid-1965. The chain grew from 8 to 18 locations in just 3 years.

There was this one dish called Cheddapeño® Biscuit that got my immediate attention. It’s a biscuit covered with the same goodies as the fried chicken.
The base is a honey-butter biscuit mixed with diced jalapeños and real cheddar cheese before being thrown in a hot oven.
Each batch is made daily. It doesn’t take that long to prepare, so in most cases, everyone can have warm baked biscuits!
Wow! This is probably one of the best biscuit-specialized dishes I have ever had. It looks like a Japanese dish called takoyaki.
The only difference is that the Japanese one uses octopus or some other form of meat. Meanwhile, this one uses zero meat. Making it a universal dish for Veg and Nonveg alike.
Enough small talk; now let’s move on to the elephant in this church! And it’s Spicy 8-Pc Feast with Chicken Tenders.
There’s a thigh and leg variant too. Pick whichever you like. It’s a big meal that also includes four of those biscuits we just had.
Along with 8 pieces of tenders served, French fries, signature hot sauce, and 4 jalapeño peppers, A super spicy meal from any angle.
Make sure to get a glass of Coke or something cold. Because this heat won’t spare anyone! Especially me, because I’m not a big fan of super spicy foods.
And yet I managed to chip down six of these bad boys before giving up. But, man, does it taste good? No wonder this chain now has thousands of stores around the world.

We ate, or I can say I have eaten a lot of fried chicken in my career. Most of them were good, but some were quite bad.

KFC is the biggest example. Yeah, some may argue their chickens have too much fat and, maybe, too many additives.
Still, we can’t crave enough; that’s how good it is. The same goes for Church’s Chicken. Their signature flavors come in the Spicer version.
