Herrell’s Ice Cream History
Steve Herrell had two big ice cream shops in his time. Both used his name; the first one was called Steve’s Ice Cream, and you already know what the second one is.
Steve’s Ice Cream was established in 1973, and here he invented the special blends used in Herrell’s Ice Cream today.
In the late 1960s, his friend introduced him to a new concept called Candy Bar. It was an interesting idea to use nuts and other healthy items inside a chocolate bar thingy.
There, he had an idea: what if he used the requested items instead of premade ones in his ice cream?
Then he launched a new ice cream series called “mix-ins.” The staff was especially told to use the requested candy or confectionery for mixing.
This concept was highly desired by customers, and it was sold out on the very first day. The store became an iconic place for cold deserts after that.
In 1977, he sold Steve’s Ice Cream to Joe Crugnale. Then he moved to Northampton, Massachusetts, with a 3-year non-compete clause.
He waited for the clause to expire before opening Herrell’s Ice Cream based on the mix-ins. It was so well received that USA Today called it the second-best in the nation.
Many other celebrities and stars praised it in high regard, using words like “delicious,” “uncompromising quality,” “a mecca for ice cream lovers,” and so on.
Ice cream is a simple dish to make that can’t be altered that much. But Steve made it possible and got handsomely rewarded for it.
This proves that even a small step can have a massive impact. All it takes is a tiny bit of courage to do so. Herrell’s Ice Cream stayed one of the nation’s best for quite a while.
Herrell’s Ice Cream Review
All your doubts about Herrell’s Ice Cream menu or prices must have been cleared by now. Especially the making part that defies their existence.
Gourmet Premium Ice Cream is the one we are looking forward to. Each store contains 40 different flavors at all times.
While 15-20 are added later on with a rotating cycle, it was a hard decision; everyone went with different kinds, and for me, it was white chocolate.
It was from the rotating cycle. It looks like vanilla on the outside but smells and tastes like chocolate.
Well, that’s how white chocolate is supposed to be. Still, something was lacking! Oh yeah, it’s the crunchy part.
Ice creams are usually boring to eat without chocolate chips or something else on top. So we bought a small can of Herrell’s® Real Chocolate Sprinkles and sprinkled it on top.
And man, oh man, this simple white chocolate suddenly tasted 1000x better. These chocolate chunks gave it the teeth-savvy ingredient that I was looking for.
It’s made out of high-quality ingredients, and when combined with already great flavors of white chocolate, just WOW!!!
Anyhow, there’s no way that I can endure another cold treat for now. So we decided to look into the pies and baked goods.
It’s interesting to see an ice cream shop bake sweets. Like ice cream, every ingredient is mixed here in their stores.
Cookie Dough Pie seemed interesting enough. Normally, it looks dark, like a chocolate brownie. But here it has a smooth, light brown texture.
The pie cake was fresh, so it was kind of fluffy. A well-made treat, that’s for sure. Some order apple pies. It had a beautiful light pink accent to it. Well, now we know whom to call for parties!
Final Thoughts
These desserts are in a different league of their own. So well made, and the quality just keeps getting better.
No wonder USA Today called it the second-best. Heck, I’ll call it my first any time of the day. It’s a shame that this marvelous brand stayed unknown for so long.
Who knows, and who doesn’t? Well, that’s a boomer! At least now we are here to write an article that will hopefully connect Herrell’s Ice Cream to more diverse people.
