Wawa History
WaWa is a convenience store now, but did you know it initially began as a dairy farm? Or even an iron foundry if we go all the way back in 1803.
Anyway, the proper history began in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, in 1890, when George Wood moved here from New Jersey.
He then started a dairy farm, which he named WaWa Dairy Farm. He imported cows from the Crown Dependencies, and he eventually bought a 1,000-acre estate for the farm.
Milk pasteurization was in its early days. So everyone drank the raw milk like it was normal. Imagine having that in 2024; these weak stomachs won’t even take it in!
Anyway, as a result, many children fell ill. It wasn’t due to the bad milk; it was expected since raw milk can have bacteria and parasites.
Later, doctors and administrators certified his milk and said there was nothing wrong with that. It tightened the faith in WaWa, and it slowly gained popularity.
The rapid expansion started in the 1920s, and their slogan was “Buy Health by the Bottle.” In the old days, these milks were hand delivered door by door in glass bottles.
But the tide started changing in the 1960s when people found out how easy and convenient it is to get your milk from stores.
WaWa tried a few concepts, like Super Wawa and Wawa Food Market. The first one is the latest concept that combines SuperMarket with a full-blown fast-food restaurant.
WaWa had an interesting way of keeping everyone addicted to their job. It was to share ownership of the performance of their employees.
The companies named it the Employee Stock Ownership Plan, and they started offering stocks in proportion to the work they put in.
Wawa Review
Our journey began with a classic breakfast of custom-oven-roasted turkey. Some items won’t be available all day, so be sure to check out the Wawa menu or prices beforehand.
From bread to butter, anything can be tweaked. I went with the default options, like a classic-tasting roll with cheddar cheese and ranch sauce.
I picked some lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, and onions as toppings. Just the sheer number of options made it quite enjoyable.
You may want to toast the entire thing, but the cold stuff stuck out for me. Because I always preferred a warm breakfast.
The inside stuff gets a bit warm, but not enough to be called toast. It’s a simple touch that made these hoagies more desirable.
And yeah, it tastes good. It used thin slices of oven-roasted turkeys. It was already baked, so the raw meat feeling was out of the question.
The fat, juicy part, along with the ranch, transformed these pieces into a dish that tastes super good.
It’s an off hour, and yet the food was made with perfection. I was looking forward to the roasted chicken sandwich.
But it was out of stock when we arrived. It seems like we have to come back tomorrow for more. Anyway, next up was a chicken salad and lettuce bowl.
There’s an entire section called “Balanced Choice,” and it has foods and combos that have some health-conscious ingredients packed in.
The one we are having has ciabatta croquettes, grape tomatoes, red onions, and lettuce for balance.
As for the chicken, it’s fried and placed in the four corners of the bowl. But I have to say, these Ciabattas taste fantastic.
These are basically bite-sized breads made with large loaves of ciabatta. They are seasoned with salt and some other spices.

You can also order online from WaWa by following the same steps below.
- First, go to Doordash or Grubhub and select your location from the list of given locations.
- After selecting the location, the menu prices of WaWa will be displayed (here you can check the menu prices of WaWa based on your selected location).
- Now, select all the food items that you want to order from WaWa and add them one by one to your cart.
- In the next step, you have to sign in to your account if you have one on Doordash or you can also create a new one.
- After successfully signing in, fill in some of your details like name, phone number, and email address, make the payment, and confirm your order.
Depending on the distance of your address, it will reach out to you and you can enjoy their yummy food items.

WaWa has around 1,058 locations. More locations are about to be opened in a few months, along with interesting breakfast additions. I’m more surprised by how well everything is placed together.
It’s an ordinary convenience store with not-so-ordinary menus. I was so surprised to see restaurant-grade food in a place like this.
Plus, the dining space was so hygienic that it felt like cheating. How can convenience store food have such charm while everything else has the same level of perfection attached to it?
WaWa made it possible somehow, and thanks to that, now it is a bigger brand with an even bigger customer base. Definitely 10/10, and I’m looking forward to the roasted chicken sandwich.
