Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken History
Lee Cummings introduced his concept in 1966. He was the nephew of 9th Colonel Sanders, and thanks to that, he knew how to handle the chicken the right way.
He began developing his recipe in 1964, right after the sale of KFC. He worked with Harold Omer and opened his first store named Harold’s Take-Home.
There he introduced his chicken recipe. It was located in Lima, Ohio. The second place opened in Columbus, along with a few more over the years.
The unfortunate death of Colonel Sanders had a big impact on Cummings. He expired on 16th December 1980.
Maybe some family problem happened, or maybe Colonel Sanders was his role model. His passion may have also died down.
Regardless, he sold the chain to Shoney’s Restaurants. Business went as usual—expansion, ups and downs—until the next buyer popped up.
This time it was none other than the franchise itself. Lee’s Famous Recipes Inc. was formed a while ago and took care of all managerial activities.
The deal was made in 2003 until another buyer came forth as the Famous Recipe Group LLC, exactly 10 years apart.
The deal was again fortified until the final buyer showed up, LFR Chicken, LLC, or Artemis Lane Partners. This was the final deal that is still held to this day. It happened in 2021.
The management changed many times. Even the location went 150 at a time. But now it is down to 131, which isn’t bad at all.
The recipes stayed the same, and the same goes for the menu. It changed slightly just to fit the modern standard.
Usual stuff like family meals, chicken nuggets, and biscuits can still be found in their former glory. More or less, the story just went silent from here. It’s peaceful, in simpler terms.
Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken Review
Now comes the most thrilling part of this article. But before that, make sure to have a quick look at Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken menu prices given above.
The first item on the list is the breast meal. And yeah, it is exactly what it sounds like. Not that breast, though; it’s chicken breast!
It comes with one whole chicken breast battered with the signature mixture of Lee’s. Includes 2 sides and a biscuit in the full combo.
The real deal is the flavor. You can pick either the famous or spicy flavors. And believe me, both taste fantastic.
Go for fame if you are new; the spicy one might be a bit too much for now. As for sides, we went with green beans and potato wedges.
The biscuit is also interesting. It’s quite big, crunchy, and has a slightly chewy side to it. Usually, these biscuits are just for show.
But here at Lee’s, it was different. The breast is well-cooked too. It warmed to the bone, and the white meat can be seen immediately after the outer layer is scratched.
Next up is another signature meal at Lee’s Famous Chicken, and it’s called Famous Chicken Sandwich. Well, the name gave it all, so no introduction is necessary.
Embrace the 60-year-old Lee’s Chicken Sandwich recipe that has been passed down the generations so we can understand why it is better than the rest.
It was made by the nephew of Colonel Sanders, and the simple but powerful outline proves that the talent for fast food ran in their family.
It also includes a chicken fillet, pickles, and chipotle ranch in between two brioche buns. The pickles do taste good, and the sourness greatly enhances the flavors.

Final Thoughts
Is it better than KFC? I guess many people asked the question while both founders were alive. Maybe we have the answer.
KFC and Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken uses an entirely different blend. Some may prefer the KFC way, while some may go down Lee’s path.
Personally, I still prefer the KFC way because I’ve been with it the longest. I have fond memories tied to it, and it gets extra marks for that. Lee’s is great in its own way, and I also loved it too.
That’s why I’m so excited to say that Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken gets 10 out of 10. An absolute banger of a place, and everyone must check it out!
