Una Mas History

The first Una Mas restaurant dates back to 1991 in San Jose. It was the time when Tex-Mex and Italian cuisines were neck-to-neck.

Both had high numbers of loyal and active customers, but Tex-Mex seems to be the true winner.

At this point, every American knows what tacos are, and the same goes for burritos, fajitas, etc. All thanks to restaurants like Una Mas that took it to the next level.

From Foghead Burritos to Margirite Salad, every single dish in Una Mas had a distinctive taste. This wasn’t a massive difference, but it was just enough to give them brand value.

The reason behind their distinctive taste was their fresh ingredients. Una Mas has direct ties with local vendors that transport fresh ingredients twice a day.

These ingredients stay fresh for a few days in normal circumstances, but Una Mas says no to that. Their goal is to make a profit and create a healthy relationship with their customers.

This gentle gesture soon turned their business into a full-blown franchise. Just three years later, a new location was opened in Menlo Park.

This was their flagship location that ran until December 2019, just before the coronavirus struck the world.

But the reason was not the pandemic; instead, it was the cost of rent. The active owner of the location at the time was a man named Mike DiPietro.

He is also the president of Golden Boy Investment Group, Inc. Anyway, according to him, the new contract for lease renewal had staggering amounts.

It was above $13,000, which is too high for a fast-casual restaurant. The lease owner did not clarify this statement, but the Una Mas from Menlo Park is certainly closed forever.

Una Mas Review

Let’s start with their most famous dish, Una Mas Burrito. This is the original burrito recipe that has been in Una Mas since day one.

It now has more side dishes, but all that’s secondary. In this one, you can choose your meat from chicken or steak. If you want a wet-style mixture of both, then it’ll cost extra.

It also includes flour tortillas, Mexican rice, pinto beans, salsa fresca, and cheese. There were five side dishes, and two of them had different size options.

We recommend going for chips and salsa fresca. This is the most popular side dish, as far as we can see.

Then comes the drink part; it also had five options, from cola to unsweetened tea. This will depend on your taste, but we will recommend going for the tea.

It had a unique texture, and it gave us a reason to return for more. Quesadillas were also highly rated among the regulars, so we tried a few of these too.

It had a flour tortilla, Monterrey Jack cheese, and salsa fresca, with guacamole and sour cream on the side. But that’s not all; we were prompted to pick our protein.

Between carnitas, chicken, shrimp, and steak. Side and drink options were the same as the burritos. So we went with the usual.

And yeah, this same item has an alternate version for kids. It was made with a flour tortilla and Monterey Jack cheese. Then it was served with a side of beans and rice.

Remember that this is a kid’s meal, so no drinks were included. You have to buy it separately. This time, we have a recommended side dish for your kid.

And it’s California. It had the same protein choices as the first dish we reviewed. But the making style was different.

Final Thoughts

When we searched for “Una Mas menu and prices” on the internet, we found little to no information about its origin.

There was no Wiki page either, which makes it seem like a rather unpopular place. But we had an entirely different experience when we entered their territory.

It can be a coincidence, but it seems like Una Mas is trying to keep their history a secret. Whatever the reason may be, it doesn’t affect the end product, which is their food.
