Amy’s Drive Thru History
The main branch, Amy’s Kitchen, was founded in 1987 by Andy and Rachel Berliner. Both had prior experience in this field since the 1950s.
They were vegan for a very long time, but leaving the craving for meat isn’t that easy. And it becomes much harder for people who have a strong protein diet from a young age.
That’s why Amy’s Kitchen developed counterparts and alternatives for meat, which is supposed to taste similar, if not exactly like, a lump of meat.
The first drive-thru opened in Rohnert Park, California, on July 20, 2015. It offers a wide variety of fast foods made with 100% organic and plant-based ingredients.
For example, burritos, burgers, pizzas, and so on were displayed. Since it didn’t have meat, the prices eventually rose by 20–30% compared to regular meat burgers.
Amy’s Drive-Thru only managed to open four locations, all based in California. And let’s not forget the numerous safety inspections that quite a lot of plants (factories) failed in these past few years.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration did a major survey in January 2022. And they found some serious violations, which were quickly solved over a week to a month.
But the biggest of all happened in June 2022, when workers from the San Jose factory reported dangerous working conditions.
Those same workers were even disciplined for sharing such information, and at that point, they had enough, with the help of UNITE HERE, the plant was closed for good.
Was it bad? Well, most likely, but it helped them fix their wrongdoings, thankfully. Plus, 2022 was the year when the factories were opening for the first time after the lockdown.
Amy’s Drive Thru Review
Make sure to check out Amy’s Drive-Thru menu and prices beforehand. They have a lot of interesting dishes, and we will only try a fraction of them.
Like a crispy Chick’n Sandwich. Sounds like chicken? Well, it is but plat-based. It comes with one patty, a pickle, lettuce, and a branch of your choice.
The patty has a gluten-free option too. This doesn’t bother me at all, so I went for the regular. And I have to say that this Sub Chipotle Ranch is amazing.
The sweet and tangy flavor makes the burger taste great. It doesn’t taste as good as real chicken, but as they say, healthy foods don’t deceive you with addictive flavors; they are just good, and that’s what matters most.
The patty was crunchy; the inside had a fluffy-like texture, with the main taste boomers stored in the middle. And yeah, the pickle was fermented well.
Make sure to add some cheddar cheese for one dollar only. Believe me, it makes a massive difference in the overall texture and flavor of this dish.
Next up is a classic burrito. More like a veggie burrito with a big, big portion. The main base is red beans, brown rice, and burrito sauce.
The outer layer of the filling had cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, and salsa that could be picked from mild, medium, or spicy intensity.
It had the best flavor when compared to the burger. The burrito sauce did its job well. While the mild salsa made it much more crave-worthy than it already is.
Regular lentil soup was the last pick on this journey. This aromatic soup was quite thick, and the healthy mixture of onion, garlic, carrot, celery, spices, etc. gave it a strong and rich flavor.

Final Thoughts
Amy’s Drive-Thru has a good range of organic alternatives to our ordinary fast foods. Still, the variations aren’t at the point where we can blindly suggest them.
Except for burgers, burritos, pizza, and soup, nothing else can compete with mainstream ideas.
As for vegan lovers, this is a highly recommended place. Or maybe you are on a diet for some reason, and then it’s a big stop for you on our way home.
Amy showed us that having a healthy meal doesn’t cost a fortune. Plants also have a lot of proteins that can and will help you compensate for the loss of real animal meat.
As far as the flavor goes, Amy’s has it down. It’s another experience worth trying, and our team offers them 7/10 points.
