Benihana History
Yunosuke Aoki, or Rocky Aoki, was a professional offshore powerboat racer who later founded Benihana in Tokyo around 1945.
Benihana is a Japanese abbreviation of safflower. It’s one of the oldest crops that was first cultivated in Mesopotamia.
Maybe it has some emotional ties with the founder himself. Maybe his wife loves it. Well, now you know what that means, so that’s that.
But did you know that the actual date goes all the way back to 1937? His first cafe was called Ellington. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in a firebombing led by the US military.
It was the era of World War II, so it was unavoidable. This same cafe was re-established with a new name, and we know what that was.
He managed to rebuild it in the same year as the bombing, which is a shocking thing to do. Two years later, he opened a restaurant on the second floor.
Over time, both were merged together and formed the Benihana we know today. The country-wise expansion began soon after.
Another flagship store was opened in Ginza, which was demolished and remodeled as the headquarters in 1997.
The US was the first international market that Benihana entered. It was West 56th Street in New York City.
The entire Aoki family moved over to NYC. He had two kids, Steve and Devon. Steve pursued the music industry and became a recognized face.
Devon became a professional model, and she also received tons of recognition over the years.
By 1983, Benihana had 11 big restaurants around the US. He eventually spun off the US divisions into a separate company, Benihana, Inc.
He still has full ownership over the non-US branches. More Japanese restaurants, like Haru in NYC and RA in Arizona, were acquired by Benihana.

This restaurant has tons of dishes that you have never heard of. So we highly recommend checking out our second segment for the Benihana menu and prices.
To start with, let’s see what Tokyo Wings taste like. Sause is the main deal in this case. Chicken is chicken, obviously, but the flavors take a massive turn based on the sauce and seasoning.
I went for black pepper teriyaki sauce. A spicy mixture of herbs is ground and layered on top of the chicken before cooking in the oven.
Sounds okay, right? But the taste says something else. A surprising twist! The flavors are different, that’s for sure.
But it feels like I have been eating it for a very long time. It’s new, but it doesn’t feel alienated at all. And the sauce is exceptionally good.
Anyway, let’s move on to our main dish, and it’s a Benihana classic called Hibachi Chicken Rice.
Rice has always been a permanent item in Asian dishes. This one is specially made with grilled chicken, rice, eggs, and chopped vegetables.
This one plate has everything from protein to vitamins and fiber. You know that food is healthy when these names pop up anywhere in the review.
But sometimes it doesn’t taste good, at least not as good as fast food. So what about this? Does it taste good? Or bad, but healthy?
Well, you have to try it out yourself to find out. For me, the mixture of eggs and chicken worked out great.
The smell was a bit irritating, but everything changed the minute it entered my mouth. Has a great balance of both flavors and ingredients.
We also saw a lot of items with raw fish. It’s a hit-or-miss kind of thing. So make sure to think twice before you order.
