El Pollo Loco History

El Pollo Loco Inside usamenuprices

Juan Francisco Ochoa founded El Pollo Loco in 1974 in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico. The chain branched into the United States in the 1980s.

El Pollo Loco is a Spanish word that translates to “The Crazy Chicken.” Which makes it obvious about their products.

The US branch expanded rapidly, and with that came a big decision that Juan had to make. In 1983, he decided to sell his USA-based El Pollo Loco restaurants and turn them into a regional independent brand.

Both sides signed a non-overlapping global territory contract. This means neither side will invade the other while both offer their own fares.

Recipes and the right to distribute them remained the same, and US branches were not starved out of them. The founder still holds the 50+ locations of the big chain in Mexico.

The USA One is now a publicly traded company that started offering in July 2014. That’s enough general knowledge; let’s see how the early days went.

The first US location was established in Los Angeles, and it was only 1500 square feet. The initial menus only offered half- or whole-fried chicken.

A side of the tortilla and a cup of salsa. It was simple, but it managed to make them earn $125,000 each and every month.

The second location opened at the Santa Ana location just a year later. We are skipping the Mexican, and you guys can guess why.

The rapid growth started in 1984 under new ownership. At this point, there were 19 to 29 El Pollo Locos in California and 6 in Houston.

The chain just kept growing, and by the end of the century, it had over 250 locations. It was featured in numerous TV shows and short ads, which only added more fuel to the fire.

El Pollo Loco Review

Make sure to check out our second segment for the El Pollo Loco menu with prices and find which item gives you the most chills.

4 pieces of fire-grilled chicken meat are the ones for me, and we ultimately went for this. It’s the best seller that comes with two sides.

A pretty good deal, if you ask me. We got 4 pieces of fire-grilled chicken, tortillas, chips, and salsa. And small broccoli and salad as a side.

The chicken was marinated in citrus. That’s why it has a lemony texture, which gives it a well-balanced sour flavor.

It goes crazy well with this hot salsa sauce and the tortilla that bundles in with the item. Get the flour tortilla instead of corn; it just tastes the best.

The chicken is well made, that’s for sure. Great flavors and the inside was as juicy as it could get. Salad and broccoli also did their part, so that’s that.

Next up was the original Pollo bowl. It had the same fire-grilled chicken as the first one. It was chopped to perfection and added to the bowl with slow-simmered pinto beans, rice, diced onions, fresh cilantro, salsa, and chips.

The chip comes with its own Salsa pack, so make sure to get one while ordering. This is probably the healthiest way to have meat in this chain.

It has veggies, meat, and rice, which makes any meal perfect. While the beans and onions will maintain consistency throughout the meal.

Chips are just for show; liking them isn’t mandatory. But the salsa sauce will give you an additional taste booster for this one.

Both dishes were jam-packed with protein. So let’s end the review for now. We had one regular glass of coke and some fresh air in the end.

Final Thoughts

Simply delicious! El Pollo Loco may be the hidden gem we are looking for. The grilled chicken has a texture that somehow has more flavor than KFC’s fried chicken.

Plus, the quantity is massive, and the two sides just hit differently. The chain has grown into a giant with 450+ outlets, and this just shows how successful these flavors have become.

Whether it be a hot bowl, tacos, or even a stuffed quesadilla, the flavor must and will remain as great as the main attraction, four pieces of fire-grilled chicken.

In conclusion, we expected this much. And it’s no surprise that El Pollo Loco gets 10/10 from our crew. Fantastic meal, and a must-try at that.
