Jack In The Box History
Robert O. Peterson converted his Topsy’s Drive-In at the 6270 El Cajon Boulevard location into Jack in the Box in 1951.
He has a history of establishing roadside stalls that sell anything from tacos to fried chicken. He even featured circus-like décor in most of his locations by the late 1940s.
Including a starry-eyed clown and much more. Anyhow, Jack in the Box mainly focused on drive-through.
It’s not a new concept; by the 1950s, many restaurants had adapted to it. It showed major improvement on the serving side.
It made the crowd big, so others also integrated it into their systems. Jack had a two-way intercom system in place for this one.
Two or three orders could be prepared at once, further enhancing the serving period. The plot was designed by a California master architect, Russell Forester. A post-war legend who grew up in La Jolla.
The stall had two clowns as mascots. The bigger one was on the rooftop, making locating the jack in the box easier.
The smaller one was beside the intercom, which said, “Pull forward; Jack will speak to you.” It’s no surprise that the clown became the mascot of this brand.
Jack in the Box is a literal example of a Halloween kid’s toy. The Jack, or clown, cranked inside a square-shaped tin can.

Super crisp, and the golden brown wings just smell heavenly. It tastes like one too; there is no doubt about it!
The fries are super great. At this point, all fries taste awesome; it’s a simple side dish that literally no one can mess with.
And yeah, the Buttermilk Ranch Dipping Sauce was tony as hell! It goes greatly with the natural spicy flavor of these wings; it is definitely a worthy experience to have.
Surprisingly, there was an entire lineup of salads. Everyone picked their favorite, so I went for the Southwest Salad with Grilled Chicken Combo.
The grilled chicken was basically showered with veggies. Like mixed greens, tomatoes, carrots, shredded cheddar, corn, black beans, and so on.
It comes with your choice of side and a drink. And yeah, a dipping sauce that isn’t too sweet nor too sour. Just the perfect flavor for this kind of dish.
