Café Coffee Day History
Veerappa Gangaiah Siddhartha Hegde, or V.G. Siddhartha for short, founded Café Coffee Day in 1996 in an Indian city called Bengaluru.
The cafe wasn’t a new concept in India, nor were companies selling coffee beans. But no one before had a 20,000-acre big estate just to grow those bitter and highly concentrated Arabica beans.
In fact, they are the biggest supplier of such beans on the whole Asian continent. The biggest markets are the USA, Europe, and Japan, along with pretty much every single country situated on the massive Asian continent.
CCD became highly popular in India, and it was expected given the efforts. By 2011, they had over 1,000 cafes across the nation.
One year ago, in 2010, a big investment firm called KKR & Co. Inc. invested $270 million in cafe coffee resorts.
But there was something else going on behind the sets. The founder, Siddhartha, was being harassed by the former Director General of Income Tax.
Along with the massive pressure of keeping the business a success, many people think it is easier for rich people, but the difficulties they face can never be understood by normal citizens.
In 2019, he committed suicide by jumping into the Netravati River in Ullal, Mangalore. A letter was found someday explaining his reasons for committing to the final resort.
By this point, CCD had an overwhelming 1700 stores across the country. Everything was going well, but over time, the falling price of coffee and other factors started affecting it.
It cost about 859.35 million USD. A couple of startups were sold, like Global Village Technology Park, and a stake in Mindtree was sold. Somehow the debts were cleared, but the business has been suffering from the losing streak for almost a decade.
Café Coffee Day Review

First, we tried some hot velvet coffee. Made with aromatic Dalgone beans and good old warm water.
A brown foam on top gives you a mini to the big mustache; it totally depends on your chin. Well, it’s quite good. Coffee isn’t my favorite, so I’ll refrain from offending some crazy coffee lovers out there.
Anyway, it’s still good. Each sip has a consistent flavor, and yeah, I have a medium-sized mustache.
Next up was a cold sidekick called Iced Mocha. Another cult classic that uses milk chocolate and the original coffee beans with cube ice.
This one hit the spot; the coldness made the sweet flavor more rich. And the bitter coffee flavor went super well with the natural bitterness of chocolate.
There are only a few things that we can try at this point. It’s almost lunchtime, so having a lot of sweets only breaks our stomachs.
It was time for some Indian-style fast food, and we finally landed on the Paneer Tikka Sandwich. We actually tried this one out on different occasions.
The paneer tikka tastes like a pizza base at some point. Rich in flavor, that’s for sure, and this specific one also had juicy veggies cramped in between.
Meat lovers get the smoked chicken sandwich. Pretty much the same stuff, only the Tikka part is replaced with some smoky meat.
Both taste great; I had a few bites of both, and ultimately, Paneer Tikka has the best flavor. The paneer itself had a full texture, which is preferred.
Final Thoughts
Café Coffee Day is one of those chains that had its fun, and now it’s suffering from a series of misfortunate events and a massive debt.
The debt part is over, most likely. But the tragic death of the founder will never be forgotten. Despite all that. it’s still the biggest seller of Arabica beans in Asia.
So it won’t die anytime soon, as long as the demand keeps coming. The COVID had a big impact; the lockdown forced everyone to go home or stay indoors. This meant only a few people could tend to the plantation.
Regardless, the food and drink part checks out. They are great, and a coffee lover may call them one of the best so far. But as for us, we give it 9/10. There is room for improvement, and I’m looking forward to what CCD will become in the future.
